Getting Lost in Maketto Community Market

What can we say about Maketto1351? Nothing that would do it the justice it deserves. Maketto is a 6,000 square foot communal marketplace located in Washington DC, that merges retail, restaurant, bar, and cafe to bring the neighborhood together for an experience like no other.

With one restaurant under his belt, people were patiently waiting for Chef Erik Bruner-Yang to open a second. Naturally, he already had customers lining up when he opened the doors and began serving his renowned steamed bao buns. What customers weren’t expecting was an equally captivating shopping space, artisan bakery, and a café.

Although four businesses inhabit the same space, with four business partners, Maketto is so much more than a restaurant with good grub, or a café with a great late, or a retail store with hidden gems. It’s a collective that on paper might seem mismatched, but works surprisingly well in practice.

Maketto is comprised of 2 buildings, a courtyard, a roof deck, and a catwalk connecting the different areas. "We wanted to create a space where everyone felt at home, whether it was to enjoy a coffee and a pastry, a nice dinner, a great selection of wines, to shop for new shoes, or to just work quietly in the cafe. Our hope is that you learn/try something new and can always find a reason to come back to see us," shares founders Erik Bruner-Yang & Will Sharp.

From mouth-watering eats, to unique clothes and crafts, you’re likely not leaving Maketto empty handed. Reserve a car and check out @Maketto1351 or connect with them on Instagram to see the latest from one of DC’s most celebrated hotspots. #BeThere with Maven.
